Brentwood is an affluent district in western Los Angeles. Not to be confused with Brentwood California in the San Francisco bay Area. The name Brentwood comes from Brentwood of Essex, England, a town on the outskirts of London dating back to Saxon times. Some of the street names have British- influence like Barrington, Gorham and Bristol. The area is also kept fairly cool by the marine breezes off the Pacific Ocean and Frequently wakes to the “marine layer” a cover of clouds brought in at night and burned off by mid-morning. Brentwood is generally split into 2 divided by Sunset Boulevard. To the north the area is defined by ridges and canyons created by the Santa Monica Mountains, to the south the area is relatively flat with the exception of Franklin Hill. The southern district features underground springs which bubble into a small creek along” the Gully” in south Brentwood near the golf course, and University High School. It also has prosperous commercial districts along each of its major roads including Wilshire Boulevard, San Vicente Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard and is largely populated by professionals and executives. Brentwood is located at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains, Bounded by Wilshire Boulevard on the south, the San Diego Freeway on the east, and the Santa Monica city limits on the southwest, the border of Topanga State Park along the ridgeline of the mountains on the north. Nearby neighborhoods and cities include, Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, West Los Angeles, Westwood, Bel Air and Encino. Although originally an agricultural district, Brentwood is now one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Los Angeles and one of the prominent districts of the Westside. There are about 22,000 housing units in Brentwood, many of which are single-family homes. There are many mansions and multi-million-dollar estates located in the hill areas north of Sunset and large modern apartments and condominiums. |
